Stockholm's Garbo bust removed from public displaySTOCKHOLM (Reuters) -- Its model made no secret of her desire for privacy, and now a bust of Swedish-born screen icon Greta Garbo is being removed from public display. Stockholm's arts authority ordered that a bust of Garbo be removed from a city park, saying that the bronze likeness was not good enough for public display. "When they proposed setting up this bust (by German artist Julia Erbe), our art experts examined it and said it was not good enough," Philippe Legros, director of the Stockholm arts council, told Reuters Friday. "So we did not grant approval for them to erect it as a work of art in a public place, and the crown bailiffs have now been asked to take it away," Legros said. The residents' association that set up the bust on Sodermalm island where the actress was born in 1905, vowed to fight the order in court. Garbo, who became famous for her compelling screen presence and enigmatic beauty, died in New York a recluse in 1990. Her ashes were buried in a Stockholm cemetery last June. Copyright 2000 Reuters.
