Britain's National Gallery shows new art inspired by Old MastersLONDON (Reuters) -- The present pitched itself against the past on Wednesday when Britain's National Gallery unveiled a collection of paintings from living artists inspired by the work of deceased Old Masters. The exhibition, entitled "Encounters, New Art from Old," is designed to give the Gallery, home to the most important collection of old art in Britain, a 21st century role.
Some 24 leading lights of the art world, including Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Anthony Caro, were allowed into the Gallery in the dead of night to sketch and measure themselves against such luminaries as Monet and Turner. "I think for many of the artists, certainly for me, it was an enormous leap of faith. It will be one of the oddest exhibitions ever," said Howard Hodgkin, who took on Seurat's Bathers at Asnieres, trading dots of color for swathes of paint. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
