CNN Style correspondent Elsa Klensch talks with Ralph Lauren about his fall/winter collection.
Ralph Lauren: Elegant, sophisticated for fall 2000
NEW YORK (CNN) -- For Ralph Lauren, spring and summer 2000 meant polka dots, stripes and gingham, the designs of play. He has abandoned that look for the fall/winter fashion season, surrendering the sunny for the sleek.
Women who wear designer clothes want elegance again, Lauren says. And he gives it to them with refined tailoring, sophisticated color (read that: black) and luxurious, soft fabrics such as cashmere.
"I found that with the economy the way it is, people want really fine clothes," he says. "They want things that they feel is the best and they can afford ... The customer (who) buys collection clothes wants really great clothes -- fabrics that are luxurious and soft, elegant."
Keeping with that mood, Lauren keeps his accessories rich, yet refined. Jewelry is a whisper, not a shout.
"I think the jewelry gives you that individual touch, whether it's big, whether it's small, whether it's dangling. I think there is the way of expressing you point of view and saying something about your individuality," he says. "And it's modern to have some of the sleek clothes with some cool jewelry."
Lauren's footwear falls in step with the rest of the collection, too.
"The boots are elegant, whether they have little fur trim ... or (are) just sleek boots with high heels," he says. "And and sleek high heel shoes -- those are the most important things."
