NEW YORK (CNN) -- To Michael Kors, being a New Yorker means glamour, luxury and elegance. The Big Apple native captures all that in his fall/winter 2000 collection.

Kors has brought back tailoring to emphasize the look. Jackets, for example, have more-defined shoulders and smaller waists, and the designer brings back tailored suits for the season.

"I think there's something about putting on something tailored and feeling polished," he says. "I also think the whole idea is being able to take those tailored pieces and mix them with something soft. So maybe (you're) wearing a softer silk dress, or a jersey skirt, and you're wearing a tailored jacket with it."

Fabrics also get a different touch. They are crisp and light, suitable for tailored attire.

"We have things that look heavy that aren't," he says. "So you have tweeds, for instance, that are in cashmere. But they're stretched tweeds, so they're really actually very airy ... Texture in general, I think, is really, really important this season."

So is evening wear, which means clothing that shines -- ensembles featuring satin, taffeta, patent leather and sequins.

"Lots of shine for evening," says Kors, "lots of ornamentation (with) a lot of Art Deco-sort-of-feeling to it because, again, I think this collection really is New York. So, automatically to me, it's the Chrysler Building."

Color? Kors emphasizes black -- with a flourish.

"It's ornamented black, so it's black with a shine," he says, "It's black with feathers. It's black with trim. It's never just flat black crepe."

It's a collection, he says, that's taking the stigma out of what Kors terms the "dirty words" of fashion -- "turned-out, dressed-up, polished, accessorized and glamorous."

"The most exciting thing to say now is, 'Oh, she really looks pretty,'" Kors says. "That's not such a dirty word anymore."

CNN Style Correspondent Elsa Klensch contributed to this report.
