Demeulemeester: Poetry, art for spring

PARIS (CNN) -- Poetry and art accent Ann Demeulemeester's outfits for spring/summer 2000. The Antwerp designer collaborated with rocker Patti Smith and contemporary artist Jim Dine to fashion the collection.

Demeulemeester embroiders Smith's poetry onto slouchy suits, T-shirts and belts, and uses Dine's photographs as prints on her fabrics. Working with the two artists, Demeulemeester says, has made her rethink the silhouette.

"I found new shapes, new lengths, new mixes," she says. "I also wanted a lot of reality (in) the clothes. And that made me choose certain materials ... like leather, like jeans, silk, the right cotton, the right classic wool."

Demeulemeester's color mainstays are black and white, augmented with leather in natural shades and dashes of twinkling red.
