Gucci puts on fresh coat for fall
MILAN (CNN) -- Sure, Gucci's fall/winter collection may have similarities to past decades, designer Tom Ford admits. But don't call it retro.
"This collection is not a retro collection," says Ford, who then makes another admission:
"Like most of my collections, there are a lot of (past) references -- everything from Barbie to the Duchess of Windsor, to the '60s, the '70s, and even to ... a little bit of Chanel (in the) '80s."The high-waisted coat is the most important piece of the new line, Ford says. "The coat to me is the jacket of the moment," he says. "I wear mine all the time."

CNN's Elsa Klensch shows us Gucci designer Tom Ford's fall/winter 2000 collection.
He does them in organza, tweed, leather, fur and mink. The shape is more structured and tailored.
"The structured coat has a slight A-line shape. That is sort of the predominate silhouette," he says. "Coats are just above the kneecap."
The suit is another important piece, "but not the suit as we know it," Ford says.
"It could be a coat and a pair of pants," he says. "It could be a jacket and a skirt, a more classic type of suit. ... It's about trying to find a new way of elegance."
To complement the outfits, Ford presents an array of accessories: bikers' scarves looped about the head, wide leather belts, bags swinging from classic chains and low-heeled, sling-back shoes with contrasting toes.
There's no questioning Ford's color preference, either. "Gold," he declares, "is back in a big way."
