De la Renta digs denim for summer

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Denim, often thought of as a classic workhorse fabric, makes a luxurious statement in Oscar de la Renta's spring/summer 2000 collection.

It's "super-extraordinary," says de la Renta, who recently was honored as the Womenswear Designer of the Year at the American Fashion Awards.

"I have made denim as a double-faced fabric," he says. "This denim is 50 percent cotton and 50 percent wool. And it's really extraordinary because it tailors in the most extraordinary manner.

"I think I'm bringing denim now to become a luxury item. I think it's important and great."
