Oracle turns focus to security with Release 2 of 8i database
(IDG) -- With an eye on the complex security needs of large electronic-commerce sites, Oracle next week will introduce Release 2 of its flagship database, Oracle 8i, at the RSA Conference 2000 in San Jose, Calif.
One of Oracle's aims with Oracle 8i Release 2, said Bob Shimp, a senior director of product marketing at Oracle, was to ensure the privacy of companies participating in online trade exchanges such as the recently announced AutoXchange headed by Oracle and Ford. To accomplish that goal, Release 2 builds upon the Virtual Private Database feature of 8i, which provides fine-grained row-level access control, to ensure that competitors who are members of the same trading community are not able to access each others' confidential information. Oracle has also added encryption technology to its database, which will allow for the secure transfer of data from the desktop to the database. Such a feature, noted Shimp, will help users avoid such security breaches as the one that recently plagued CD Universe. Finally, the company has added support for the Secure Sockets Layer protocol standard and encryption of Java Database Connectivity for both thick and thin Java clients in Release 2. In addition to the added security features, Oracle 8i Release 2 includes expanded analytic functionality for data warehousing, native Java2 support, remote debugging of Java programs, and improvements to the database's enterprise management features. Oracle 8i Release 2 is currently available for a variety of Unix flavors, including Sun Solaris and HP-UX, with a Windows NT version expected to ship in mid-February.
