(IDG) -- Finally that great oracle of pop culture, MTV, has put its name on something worthwhile. MTV Music Generator may not have 300-hit combos, 500 real cars, or 35 levels of fragfest mayhem, but it's a mellow and intelligent PlayStation experience. DJ Destroyer You're the DJ with MTV Music Generator. You start with a clean screen and cut-n-paste your choice of samples from the huge riff library Codemasters has put together. It's up to you to glom together some kick ass riffs and create jams that would make Mixmaster Mike quake in his shorts.

The number of options and choices you have is astounding. You can make a mellow guitar vibe, a funky groove, a hip hop jam, or whatever you want -- and you can even make your own music video to accompany your song, and sample sounds from your own CDs to mix into your songs. Very cool.
Get the generator running The presentation of Music Generator is sparse and practical, with simple menus and everything in its place. Since sound is the cornerstone of Music Generator, they put a lot of work into making it perfect. The graphics are very cool, especially the psychedelic images the game shows you as it plays your music CDs, but they are nothing spectacular. The game controls well, making mixing music simple, but there are a few more complex tricks that music makers might miss, like fading in or out individual tracks. It might not be a game, per se, but the Generator is cranking. If you're a musician, or you've ever wanted to be one, you shouldn't pass up this chance to shine. Pro tips If you want to make drastic changes in the middle of your song, consider "breaking it down," or running a few bars of just drums or bass. This will let you make beat changes without making them too sudden and jarring. Don't forget the "effect" channels at the very bottom of the screen. They'll let you do fades, apply reverb and make other effects to give your song that extra professional quality.
