(IDG) -- Utility company-turned-ISP Enron plans to speed up development of its broadband Internet service through an arrangement with Sun Microsystems that was announced Thursday.

Specifically, Sun will work with Enron Broadband Services to build its broadband infrastructure and operating system.

Under the agreement, Enron bought 18,000 Sun Netra servers to expand its footprint to more than 2,000 points of presence. Sun then purchased broadband video-streaming services from Enron.

Enron's Intelligent Network is an IP-based network with embedded software called Enron Broadband Operating System (BOS). The network is designed to deliver bandwidth-heavy content such as live and streamed video over Internet.

Enron is developing BOS on Sun's Solaris operating environment to allow speedy provisioning of bandwidth over multiple networks.

Enron Corp., in Houston, is at www.enron.net.

Sun Microsystems Inc., in Palo Alto, Calif., is at www.sun.com.
