From... A Ticketmaster outlet in your home
January 27, 2000 by Laura Rohde (IDG) -- Forget about waiting in long lines outside the stadium for tickets to that big game or concert. Soon, you'll be able to buy your tickets online -- and print them directly from your PC. On Tuesday, Ticketmaster.com announced that concertgoers will soon be able to purchase, download, and print bar-coded event tickets from their PCs. The electronic self-printing ticketing service will be offered as soon as the second quarter of this year, according to a statement from Ticketmaster.com, which is owned by Ticketmaster Online and CitySearch.
The bar codes printed on the ticket will work with Ticketmaster's Facility Access Network, a hardware and software system the company uses with client venues and its own ticket center outlets. The company has 3750 client vendors worldwide and sells $1.5 million in tickets online every day, according to company representatives. Client venues include arenas, stadiums, performing arts stages, and theaters offering music concerts, sporting events, plays, and dance performances. The company did not say which client venues plan to adopt the new bar-code FAN system, or if consumers would be charged an extra fee for downloading tickets themselves, or whether they would save the shipping and handling fee. The new technology will also be used to develop personalized direct marketing to customers online and over the telephone. For example, special offers from local merchants working with the CitySearch.com site can be sent to customers using the new service, according to Ticketmaster.com. The company will begin demonstrations of its ticket service at the International Ticketing Association Conference being held next week in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ticketmaster.com says.
