SINGAPORE (IDG) -- Malaysian mobile phone operator Maxis Communications will launch a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Internet access service in the second quarter of this year, the company has announced.

The service, which is beginning a three-month trial this week, will offer subscribers local and foreign news items, financial news, weather information, a currency conversion service and games using their mobile phones, Maxis said.

With the launch of the service, Malaysia will join neighbor Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and China on the list of Asia-Pacific countries testing or delivering mobile Internet services via mobile phones.

After the trial period, Maxis plans to introduce several new features for WAP, including transaction services and electronic business, the company said.

Initially the WAP service will be tested using the Nokia 7110 mobile phone, but other models will be added when the service goes commercial. The company expects that between 10 percent and 20 percent of its 700,000 subscribers will migrate to WAP services after the trial is completed.

Maxis is a majority locally owned company in which British Telecommunications holds a 33 percent stake and U.S. broadband company MediaOne Group holds 12.6 percent.
