Sega to launch broadband service in Japan
(IDG) -- Sega Enterprises said last week it plans to launch a broadband Internet service in July 2000 for users of its Dreamcast console in Japan. To launch the new service, Sega has formed links with 40 cable television network operators across Japan, including operators in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. It plans to eventually increase the number of operators offering the service to 200, it said in a statement. To access the service, users will require the new Dreamcast broadband adapter. The unit, which will go on sale on July 15 to match the start date of the service, will cost 8,800 yen (US$83) and be manufactured by CSI, a joint venture of CSK and IBM Japan.
The announcement, the latest salvo in an ongoing battle between Sega and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), came just hours before SCEI announced a new portable version of its PlayStation console and a hard disk/network adapter unit for the new PlayStation 2. Like the new Sega adapter, the PlayStation 2 network adapter supports speeds up to 100M bits per second. Unlike Sega, SCEI has yet to line up any deals with cable network operators or other broadband providers, but the company is expected to be making such announcements in the coming months leading up to the launch of its service sometime late this year or early 2001.
