Think tank decries Oracle investigation
(IDG) -- A conservative political and economic think tank that has sided with Microsoft in its antitrust battles reacted indignantly Tuesday to the news that Oracle hired a private investigator to examine its activities. Oracle admitted that it hired Investigation Group International (IGI) to examine the Independent Institute of Oakland, California, and the National Taxpayers Union of Arlington, Virginia.
Oracle claimed in a statement issued Tuesday that both were misrepresenting themselves as independent advocacy groups when they were funded by Microsoft to influence public opinion in favor of the software company. A statement released Tuesday by Independent Institute Founder and President David Theroux professed disappointment at what it called Oracle's attempt to "smear us by calling into question the legitimacy of our 14-year scholarly, public-policy research program."
The Independent Institute has backed Microsoft in the antitrust lawsuit brought by the federal government and 19 U.S. states and organized an "open letter on antitrust protectionism" to President Bill Clinton. The letter, according to Theroux's statement, criticizes the prosecution of Microsoft as having "nothing to do with consumer welfare and everything to do with corporate welfare." Theroux maintained in his statement that Microsoft's two-year membership in the Independent Institute has not altered the substance or conclusions of the group's work and that the institute has never performed contract research.
