Sprint activates voice-dialing

(IDG) -- Sprint PCS last week announced a network-based, voice-activated dialing option for its wireless users.

Using technology from several vendors patched together by integrator IBM, Sprint PCS is offering new capability which provides a way for customers to manage, organize and dial hands-free up to 2,500 phone numbers.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Sprint PCS has positioned its Voice Command capability as a key part of the company's "telematics" strategy with automotive giants such as Ford Motor.

Voice Command users get a personalized Web page they can manipulate by voice to execute calls and complete other functions such as look up of directory names.

Backing up IBM's solution for Sprint PCS is Nuance which is providing speech recognition software and Cisco Systems, which is providing an end-switching platform, said a spokeswoman.

Sprint PCS Voice Command is now available nationwide to businesses and consumers.
