(CNN) -- It's no secret why search engines are among the most popular sites on the Web -- we'd be lost without them. But finding a search engine that suits your needs can also leave you feeling a little lost.

We joined Dan Tynan, of PC World, to explore a few search sites. The largest sites are called portals, and we started with the biggest: Yahoo! Best for finding a lot of information on a general topic, Yahoo!'s search is fast but not helpful if you're looking for something specific.

To pinpoint a specific topic, Hotbot is a good choice. The usual rules apply for specific keyword searches -- use words like "and," "not" or "or." You can also indicate the date, language and how many results to display. Hotbot extends your search by including pictures, MP3s and streaming video.

For the conversationalists among us, Ask Jeeves holds a unique place because it handles natural language. You can "talk" to Jeeves the butler just like you would talk to a real person. For example, rather than type in the keyword "tie," you could ask, "How do I tie a necktie?"

Ready to take it up a notch? Metasearch tools contain multiple search engines. A popular one called Dogpile returns top-level results from 18 search engines, including Yahoo!, Lycos and Alta Vista, so you don't have to hop from one search engine to another.

If you keep up with search engine developments, then you're aware that Google has been getting a lot of attention lately. Its simple interface appeals to those tired of viewing products and advertisements while searching. You can have Google list sites related to your keywords, or you can press the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button if you think Google can take you directly to the site your looking for.
