Nokia licenses EMI songs for ring tones

(IDG) -- Songs by the Spice Girls, Sting and Janet Jackson might soon be chiming through Nokia phones under a licensing arrangement between Nokia and EMI Group's music publishing division.

Nokia announced Wednesday it has signed an agreement with EMI that calls for songs in EMI's music catalog to be used for custom downloadable ring tones. Under the terms of the tie-up, EMI will license the use of ring tones to Nokia on a nonexclusive worldwide basis, Nokia said in a release.

In addition to the Spice Girls, Sting and Janet Jackson, EMI's catalog includes the artists Matchbox 20, Puff Daddy, Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, Enrique Iglesias, TLC and Phil Collins.

The initial service will contain well-known songs, television and film themes. Other popular titles will be added on a regular basis, the release said.

The ring tones will be available at the Club Nokia service, and users will be able to download them by sending a short message to a specific telephone number or by using the Club Nokia Credits system. The release did not say how much it will cost to download the songs.

The selection of tunes will allow people to stand out from the crowd with their own set of personalized songs, tailor-made for every occasion, mood and lifestyle, Ilkka Raiskinen, vice president of mobile applications and services, said in the release.
