(IDG) -- If you're looking for football action on your PC this year, there's only one game in town... literally. Thankfully, Madden NFL 2001 offers enough features to please most computer gridiron fans.

The first thing you will notice about Madden 2001 is the updated graphics engine. Adding to the realism this year are more detailed player models (which now include accessories like gloves and elbow pads) and new character animations with player-specific celebrations.

The entire NFL lineup, including all current teams, players, and coaches, has been included Madden 2001. You can choose to play any of the teams in an exhibition game or through a complete season. There is even a Franchise mode, where you play through multiple seasons and make draft picks, trade players and negotiate contracts.

There is also a Great Games mode, where you can play a series of scenarios based on famous games in NFL history to unlock hidden teams and stadiums. And if something about the game doesn't suit your taste, everything is customizable, from the accuracy of the passing to effectiveness of the blockers.

Solid gameplay has always been a trademark of the Madden series, and Madden 2001 is no exception. The sim aspect of the game has been ramped up, so gamers expecting arcade-style action may be disappointed. A decent knowledge of football is required since choosing the correct plays is more important than gamepad skills.

Controlling your team is simple for the most part (a gamepad is a must), although getting the hang of all the button controls can be frustrating-novices may find themselves diving when they intended to spin. The menu interface, meanwhile, is easy to navigate.

The sounds of the struggle have been accurately recreated for the game, from the clash of helmets and shoulder pads to the grunts of the players. Pat Summerall does a good job with the play calling and the color commentary from Madden himself is amusing at times but quickly becomes repetitive.

For being the only real football game available on the PC this year, Madden 2001 is about as good as it gets. Fans of the series will probably be split on the new features, but most gamers will find enough action in Madden 2001 to keep them occupied until next season.
