Review: Pokemon Puzzle League

Pokemon Puzzle League is a fun twist on the Tetris model of puzzle games

(IDG) -- Pokemon Puzzle League is a fun twist on the puzzle game genre with some fun and fast puzzle game action mixed with Pokemon flavor. Pokemon fans will appreciate the intro cartoon and the Pokemon characters that are shown throughout the game, and puzzle fans will like the simple but challenging gameplay that makes this game one of the better puzzle games on the N64.

A solid tutorial that shows you the basics of gameplay will get newbies right into the game. In addition, a good "Mimic Mode" teaches you the advanced art of combos and chain scores that are essential to winning the game. There are a few different gameplay modes; you can go head to head with another human, or play against the computer in the Stadium. Puzzle University has you try to clear the playfield in a limited number of moves. In Marathon Mode, you play for a time record. You can also battle Team Rocket in a separate mini-game that's incredibly tough.

Gameplay is very simple: you can move the colored blocks either left or right one space with a cursor. Line up three to make them disappear, or arrange four or more in a row for a higher bonus score. Any move you make that blasts four or more blocks will freeze the playfield for a few seconds, buying you some precious time to arrange other blocks more strategically. Be warned, you'll need all the combo and chains you can muster; the pace gets so fast that scoring these is the only way to stay alive.

Even though it's yet another take on Tetris, Pokemon Puzzle League has enough game modes to give it extra depth, and learning the art of advanced chains and combos will take a long time. Pokemon and puzzle game fans will appreciate this fun and challenging N64 game.
