(IDG) -- Which company has the better fighters? You decide in this match of the millennium. Read on.

My franchise can beat your franchise

For hardcore fans of 2D fighting games, two companies continually faced off year after year even in the face of spanking new 3D games. Capcom vs. SNK finally let's fans settle the score once and for all as to who comes out on top. For Capcom, all of the characters come from their various Street Fighter incarnations, while SNK's selection come from all their different franchises, although most have already been featured in the King of Fighters series. There are some exceptions, but these are secret characters, so we're not going to be evil and ruin the surprise just yet.

The graphics are very much a mixed bag of delights and disappointments. Overall, the characters don't look very sharp, and many of the Street Fighter characters look like they were ported from SF Alpha 3, except even thinner. The animation is also a bit disappointing, because both companies have put out better-animated titles. The music and sound effects are great, although there are some very average tunes in some stages.

The most crucial feature in a 2D fighting game like this is the gameplay fighting system, and in this area Capcom vs. SNK absolutely nails it. You can choose to play with either one of the companies' different fighting styles, although the overall system is a hybrid of both. This way, the battles can take place on the most even playing field as possible. It takes a little getting used to, but the learning curve is worth it.

Final Fight?

While it would be nice to have more available characters, Capcom vs. SNK will keep you busy for a very long time, mastering the nuances of the fighting engine and unlocking the huge amount of hidden features. Capcom vs. SNK is a fantastic addition to the Dreamcast fighting library, although only hardcore fans need apply.

Pro Tips

  • You can also unlock alternate versions of the characters that have different sets of moves.

  • Don't like the power ratio of your favorite character? You can unlock a feature to adjust any characters ratio to weaken or strengthen them to your liking.
