Compaq announces wireless business initiative
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (IDG) -- Compaq will sell wireless Internet access services to users of its IPaq handheld devices, the company announced here Monday. Compaq's IPaqnet Mobility Solutions will work with IPaq Pocket PCs and IPaq BlackBerry devices. IPaq BlackBerry users will be able to surf the web and access Internet e-mail for an additional $19.95 a month over their basic Blackberry service subscription, while Pocket PC users who buy a Sierra Wireless AirCard 300 modem for $299 will be able to get mobile Internet access with nationwide roaming for $60 a month.
Users of these mobile Internet services can add secure access to Microsoft Exchange mail with the IPaqnet Mobile Email option, or access to their corporate intranet with the Mobile Intranet option, for a flat set-up fee of $150. Compaq's wireless portal page will include content from Infospace.com Inc., but users will not be restricted in the sites they visit using the service. The IPaqnet offerings will be available in December, the company said. Compaq also demonstrated a Compaq Armada M300 notebook PC with integrated Bluetooth capabilities. Bluetooth is a short-range radio frequency technology that allows electronic devices like PDAs (personal digital assistant), cellular phones and laptop computers to communicate with each other wirelessly.
