One Web page promoting the film "MacArthur Park" carries a fake police report on the fictionalized murder of Bill Gates

(IDG) -- Expect Bill Gates to paraphrase Mark Twain's famous remark as word gets around about a new film portraying his assassination. The makers of the film, titled "MacArthur Park," are using the Internet to create a buzz around the film, shot in the style of a feature-length documentary.

Haxan Films, the company behind the 1999 hit "The Blair Witch Project," another film extensively promoted online, has been engaged as "key advisor."

One Web site promoting "MacArthur Park" carries a fake police report on the murder (see "The Garcetti Report," link below), while another is the supposed home of an action group dedicated to uncover the truth on the Gates' assassination.

In the film Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is killed while attending a charity event in Los Angeles' MacArthur Park. The fatal shot is fired from the rooftop of the Park Plaza hotel. The staging looks similar to that of Oliver Stone's 1991 movie JFK about the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

In the what the movie portrays as the "official version," the gunman fled, killed a police officer, and was caught in the hotel basement where the police killed him. The investigation into the motive of the alleged assassin reveals he is a political radical attempting to start a "class war" by killing the world's richest man.

The film's promoters also are using the Web site of a fictional organization called Citizens for Truth to generate interest. The movie chronicles the efforts of the group of Los Angeles grass-roots activists as they try to unravel what they believe is a conspiracy.

As with the "Blair Witch Project," the orchestrated online investigation looks very realistic. Followers can subscribe to receive e-mail updates from Citizens for Truth, and the site offers news releases and pictures of the group's "three-day-long First Annual Research Conference."

Nowhere does the Citizens for Truth Web site say that it is a fictional organization. It does, however, give a hint with the announcement that "Citizens for Truth has agreed to be the subject of a feature-length film about the Bill Gates assassination controversies by documentary filmmaker Brian Flemming called MacArthur Park!"
