Hubble postage stamp series unveiled
(CNN) -- The U.S. Postal Service issued five new commemorative postage stamps Monday celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The stamp series, unveiled in a ceremony at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, features images of the Eagle Nebula, the Ring Nebula, the Lagoon Nebula, the Egg Nebula and Galaxy NGC 1316, all taken by Hubble over the past 10 years.
Launched aboard the space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990, Hubble's mission is to operate as a long-lived
space-based observatory for the benefit of the international astronomical community. Hubble is a cooperative program of the European Space Agency and the NASA.
NASA names director of Mars program office
PASADENA, California -- Dr. Firouz Naderi has been selected
as the manager of the newly created Mars Program Office at
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the space agency announced.
Naderi joined JPL in 1979 and has been the manager of NASA's
Origins Program since 1996. The new Mars Program Office will
serve as the single point-of-contact for NASA Headquarters at
JPL for all Mars exploration efforts.
Born in Shiraz, Iran in 1946, Naderi received his doctorate
in electrical engineering from the University of Southern
California.
The Mars Program Office was created in the wake of a March 28 independent panel report criticizing the management of NASA's Mars exploration program, which suffered the complete losses of three missions last year.
