Events postponed, but balloons still sail in New Mexico

  INTERACTIVE GALLERY

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (CNN) -- Uncooperative weather has hampered competitive events at the 2000 Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico, forcing the postponement of the America's Challenge gas balloon race Monday and other events early Tuesday.

Despite the low-cloud cover and shifting winds, officials at the world's largest hot air balloon festival are optimistic the weather will soon clear and events in the sky celebrations will get back on track.

Although competition was canceled Monday, dozens of recreational balloons inflated and lifted off, filling the skies above Albuquerque with an array of brilliant colors.

On Saturday, a record-breaking 329 balloons took off in one hour at the start of the fiesta, shattering the previous record of 132 hot air balloons launched in 55 minutes in England earlier this year. The fiesta ends on Sunday, October 15.
