Flying air courier: Less costly, more hassle

(CNN) -- As airfares climb, leisure travelers are looking for a cheaper way to fly. Some have found their answer on air courier services, which claim they can cut ticket costs by as much as 85 percent.
But be forewarned: Even with those savings, courier services aren't for everybody.

In exchange for a bargain ticket, the companies restrict you to carry-on baggage only. You must be available to take off at the last minute -- usually alone, or separate from a travel companion.
If you think you're flexible enough to handle that, some Web sites can get you airborne. The International Association of Air Couriers and the Air Courier Association update available flights daily on the Internet. They also make sure that courier services are reputable.
