Report: Prosecutors apparently reach plan to break up Microsoft

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Government lawyers apparently have reached a consensus on how to split up software giant Microsoft, USA Today reported in its Wednesday edition.
The proposal reportedly favors a split along product lines, which could mean the company would be divided into two or three sections.

According to the report, one company would be for Microsoft's Windows operating system, while another would be for software, the sources said. The newspaper report said it was not clear whether Microsoft's Internet business would become a third company, under the plan.
Microsoft is expected to reject the proposed breakup.
Microsoft's Windows applications run about 90 percent of the world's PCs.
