Van carrying women's college swim team crashes in Ohio, 1 dead

COSHOCTON, Ohio (CNN) -- A van carrying a women's college swim team crashed on an ice-slickened highway in central Ohio Thursday, killing at least one person. Two others were airlifted to a Columbus hospital where they remain in serious and fair condition.

The van was carrying members of the Kenyon College women's swim team when it crashed around 6:45 p.m. ET on U.S. 36 just outside of Coshocton, about 60 miles east of Columbus.

A burst of snow had moved through the area around the time of the accident -- one of many reported in the region.

Authorities said 11 people were in the van at the time of the accident along the four-lane highway. One person died at the scene and another was airlifted from there.

The others were taken to Coshocton County Hospital. Nursing supervisor Debbie Lehman said some members of the swim team were still hospitalized with non-lifethreatening injuries, while others had been released.

She said one student was airlifted from the hospital to a facility in Columbus.

Of the two women transported to Columbus, one 18-year old female remained in serious condition with a collarbone fracture and a bruised lung, according to Grant Medical Center officials in Columbus. A nursing supervisor said she was awake, alert and talking when she arrived to the hospital. A second 19-year old woman remained in fair condition with injuries to her head and back. She was to undergo back x-rays overnight.

The women's swim team at Kenyon College is one of the most prestigious Division III programs in the nation. The team was reportedly returning from a meet at the University of North Carolina.

Kenyon College is in Gambier, about 30 miles west of the crash.
