FBI Web site hacked last week

February 26, 2000
Web posted at: 2:52 a.m. EST (0752 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI's Web site was hit by hackers last week with the same type of attack that had earlier clogged several of the world's most popular sites, officials said Friday.

  MESSAGE BOARD

FBI spokeswoman Debbie Weierman said the Web site was down "for several hours" on February 18, but was back up that evening.

Weierman said the disruption was contained to www.fbi.gov, and did not affect any of the FBI's operational computers.

"We've experienced these before," she said. Last year, the FBI took down its Web site for several days following a similar attack.

The FBI is leading the federal investigation into the recent rash of so-called denial of service attacks, which disrupted about a dozen Web sites, including Yahoo!, Amazon.com and cnn.com.
