WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President and Mrs. Clinton hosted the nation's governors at a White House dinner Sunday night during which the president urged his visitors to help build on the nation's recent economic successes..

The president thanked the governors, saying they have played a role in improving conditions for Americans. Thirty-four state governors attended.

"With your help and hard work America has made great strides these last seven years, cutting crime ... improving education, moving millions from welfare to work," the president said.

Reflecting on the closing months of his presidency, Clinton urged the governors to make the most of this time of economic prosperity.

"In a year I will be a private citizen. Most of you will still be serving -- remember that. We have the chance of a lifetime," he said.

One of those not there to hear Mr. Clinton's message in the State Dining Room was Texas Governor George W. Bush who remained on the campaign trail.

The governors are in Washington for the winter meeting of the National Governor's Association.

On Monday, the state leaders will be back at the White House for a meeting with President Clinton. They are expected to discuss issues like education, crime, health care, and the rise in home heating oil prices, according to a White House spokesman.
