European fuel prices even higher than those in U.S.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- While the average price of premium gasoline in the United States climbs closer to $2 a gallon -- and already tops that figure in some parts of the country -- that's still well below what motorists pay in western Europe.

Figures from the federal government's Energy Information Agency, a division of the U.S. Department of Energy, show what a gallon of premium gasoline cost for the week ending March 6.

The prices are in U.S. dollars and include taxes.

United Kingdom -- $4.61

Netherlands -- $4.22

France -- $3.94

Italy -- $3.84

Belgium -- $3.72

Germany -- $3.63

United States -- $1.67
