| Shooting spree suspect to face homicide charges
Surrenders after hiding out overnight
SANDY, Utah (CNN) -- A 21-year-old suspect in Thursday's shooting deaths of two people and the wounding of three others was expected to be charged Friday with two counts of homicide, two counts of attempted homicide and a count of aggravated assault, police said. Quinn Robert Martinez surrendered to police Friday morning about two blocks from where the shootings took place. Martinez invoked his right to remain silent as soon as he gave himself up, said police spokesman Kevin Thacker.
Martinez, of Salt Lake City, had eluded a police manhunt overnight by staying in a friend's apartment in Sandy, a suburb about 10 miles south of Salt Lake City, Thacker said. When police determined Martinez was in the apartment, they negotiated with him by telephone, and he gave himself up at 8:30 a.m.
Woman refuses to give up car, is shotThe spree started Thursday night at the Extended StayAmerica Hotel, where the suspect had paid for a $39 room. Martinez tried to take a car from another guest. When his efforts failed, Martinez shot the woman in the leg, Thacker said. The suspect, who has "an extensive criminal record," then crossed the street and entered a Chevy's restaurant, where he shot and killed the restaurant's 33-year-old manager and wounded a 22-year-old employee, said Thacker. The wounded man was taken to the University of Utah Medical Center, where he was in stable condition. Police said the suspect then walked out of the restaurant to its parking lot, where he shot and killed a 43-year-old customer in another unsuccessful attempt to take a car. The suspect then tried to stop a woman as she drove out of the parking lot. When she did not stop, Martinez shot through the windshield of her car, wounding the 44-year-old driver in the face. But the wounded woman kept on driving, Thacker said. Wounded victim drives to safetyThe suspect tried to follow the wounded woman's car but gave up when she pulled into a gas station down the street from the restaurant. The woman was listed in serious but stable condition at Latter-day Saints Hospital, said the nursing supervisor. A handgun used in the shooting was found, Thacker said. The woman shot at the hotel was treated and released. Police said Martinez's record includes convictions for weapons offenses, stolen vehicles, burglaries and armed robbery as a juvenile.RELATED STORIES: Arrest made after Detroit-area shooting leaves 2 dead RELATED SITES: Sandy City Police Department Online | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
