Man holds two women hostage outside Detroit, one person killed
MOUNT CLEMENS, Michigan (CNN) -- A gunman is holding two women hostage in a home outside Detroit. A man pulled from the yard of that home with gunshot wounds died in surgery at Mount Clemens General Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Earlier, emergency workers had been afraid to enter the yard to assist the man because the gunman inside the house had been firing shots, Mount Clemens Fire Department Capt. Doug Charbonneau said. Police crouched behind cars and called on a bullhorn for the man inside the house to pick up the phone. Authorities blocked off roads in the neighborhood surrounding the home in Mount Clemens, about 15 miles north of Detroit. Chelsea Charles, who was watching the scene unfold from her grandparents' second-floor window adjacent from the home, said police were making no attempt to enter the house, and that there had been no sounds coming from within for the 30 minutes she had been home. "They told us to stay in our house," said neighbor Bernard Wellhausen, who was separated from the standoff scene by one house. The two-story house in which the women were being held was bought two years ago by a man in his 30s, his wife and their two school-age children, Wellhausen said.
