Wildfires threaten subdivisions in southern New Mexico

May 8, 2000
Web posted at: 1:23 a.m. EDT (0523 GMT)

RUIDOSO, New Mexico (CNN) -- Wildfires threatened several subdivisions in a southern New Mexico community late Sunday, forcing dozens of residents to be evacuated.

Police in Ruidoso said they were evacuating people in more than 50 homes endangered by the fires. High winds were making fighting the brush fires difficult.

No homes had yet been burned. An evacuation center had been set up at an elementary school.

Ruidoso is located about 50 miles west of Roswell.
