California English teacher to be named National Teacher of Year

May 10, 2000
Web posted at: 1:37 AM EDT (0537 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A California high school English teacher who has taught for 35 years is to be named National Teacher of the Year, the White House has announced.

Dr. Marilyn Jachetti Whirry is to be given the award during a White House ceremony on Thursday. State Teachers of the Year 2000 and previous National Teachers of the Year also will be honored at the event.

Whirry will become the eighth English teacher, and second from California, to receive the teaching award.

Whirry is a 12th grade English teacher at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California. Thirty-four of her 35 years in teaching have been in California.

In addition to teaching English literature, Whirry, a mother with two sons, has presented more than 350 workshops to teachers -- 28 on reading and writing strategies in the summer of 1999 alone.

"I share the excitement of work with other teachers and my students, and their enthusiasm and sense of possibility increases," Whirry said in a statement.

"We will never truly know how many students' lives are changed by our sense of responsibility and the excitement that we have toward living."

The National Teacher of the Year Program focuses public attention on teaching excellence and is the oldest and most prestigious awards program for teachers.

The program is sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers and Scholastic Inc., a global children's publishing and media company.

Whirry began teaching in 1959 as an English literature instructor at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, before moving to Massachusetts, where she taught for one year at Newton High School. From 1961-67, Whirry took classes at Harvard, had two children and worked for a publishing company at home.
