Strong storms leave thousands in eastern U.S. without power

BALTIMORE, Maryland (CNN) -- Severe thunderstorms packing heavy rains and strong winds hit several areas in the eastern United States Saturday evening leaving thousands without power.

Baltimore Gas and Electric spokesman Mile Delaney said more than 55,000 homes were without power throughout much of central Maryland on Sunday morning.

One wind gust was reported at 115 miles per hour at Andrews Air Force Base as the storms passed. More than 80 crews are working to restore power in Maryland.

High winds, hail, lightning and minor flooding were also reported in and around the Washington area. Power outages from these storms have affected customers in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

This is the same weather system that spawned a tornado in Lake Whiney, Texas on Friday killing a 70-year-old man.
