Ramseys square off with ex-investigator over JonBenet's death
NEW YORK (CNN) -- John and Patsy Ramsey held a heated, nationally televised exchange Wednesday night with a former police detective who has adamantly accused Mrs. Ramsey of killing her 6-year-old daughter. Steve Thomas, the former lead investigator in the JonBenet case, who has written a book about the subject, sat at a table with the Ramseys, looked at them directly and told his theory: that Mrs. Ramsey killed her daughter after a fit of rage over a bedwetting incident. "I look you right in the eye," he said to Mrs. Ramsey on CNN's "Larry King Live." "I think you're good for this. I think that's what the evidence suggests."
He said that of handwriting samples from 73 suspects that were compared to a ransom note found in the Ramseys' home in Boulder, Colorado, Mrs. Ramsey's sample was the only one that showed "evidence to suggest authorship." "Patsy, you could have been arrested in this case," Thomas said. "I wish I had been, and then we would have had a free and fair trial. And you would have met your Waterloo, Mr. Thomas," Patsy Ramsey said. "You have assaulted my wife," Mr. Ramsey said, leaning over and pointing at the ex-investigator. "You have called her a murderer. You have checked 73 suspects and said, 'Because Patsy's handwriting was the only one that couldn't be eliminated, therefore she is a murderer.' That is absurd." "Can Patsy answer the question, Mr. Ramsey?" Thomas responded. "If you continue to assault her, I will continue to answer the questions," Mr. Ramsey said. "She came on the show tonight, I'm assuming she's capable of answering questions," Thomas said. "She's very capable of answering your questions," Mr. Ramsey snapped. Mrs. Ramsey then said, "I totally agree that whoever wrote this ransom note killed our daughter." She then looked at Thomas and said, "How is it exactly that you think that I killed my daughter? I just cannot understand that."
"I wasn't there. You were home that night," Thomas said. At one point, the Ramseys spoke of their belief that an intruder entered their home on Christmas day in 1996 and killed their daughter. "The kidnapper who forgot his ransom note?" Thomas said sarcastically. "The kidnapper who forgot his ... tools and all his instruments?" "I refuse to have a Jerry Springer type exchange with this man," Mrs. Ramsey said. At the end of the hour-long show, Mrs. Ramsey said "only God" knows who murdered JonBenet and that "the truth is going to prevail."
