Cancer Society executive arrested after international manhuntCOLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) --An executive of the American Cancer Society was arrested on Friday night in connection with the embezzlement of $6.9 million from the non-profit group, the FBI said on Saturday. Daniel S. Wiant, 34, was taken into custody when he got off a plane that had landed at Port Columbus International Airport after a flight from Toronto, said Brian Lynch, an FBI spokesman. He had become the subject of an international manhunt. Wiant, who was accompanied on the flight by his lawyer, was charged with one count of bank fraud and held overnight in the Franklin County jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Wiant was the chief administrative officer for the Columbus chapter of the ACS, where he had worked for more than five years, Lynch said. Married with children, Wiant transferred the funds, Lynch said, to a bank in Austria and then left the country. "The subjects did not get the money," Lynch said. Officials are trying to determine whether others were involved in the scheme, he added. RELATED STORIES: CNN.com - Health: Cancer RELATED SITES: National Cancer Institute |
