San Antonio archbishop threatened with hand grenade

Hostage negotiators on the scene

June 28, 2000
Web posted at: 1:09 p.m. EDT (1709 GMT)

SAN ANTONIO (CNN) -- A man who said he had a hand grenade entered the offices of San Antonio Catholic Archbishop Patrick Flores on Wednesday, threatening to kill him, police said. Hostage negotiators were at the scene.

  MESSAGE BOARD

The incident took place on the third floor of the building where Flores has his offices. Police said the archbishop and his secretary, Myrtle Sanchez, are inside. Another secretary escaped.

Police evacuated about 100 people from the building. Some ran out screaming, one witness said. Dozens of officers surrounded the building.

"We're just hoping and praying that nothing happens," a spokesman for Flores said.
