WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A fire broke out Saturday evening on the fifth floor of a high-rise apartment building for senior citizens in the Chinatown section of the capital.

The fire began around 7:15 p.m. EDT. Heavy smoke spread throughout the fifth floor and upper floors.

At least one elderly woman had to be rescued by firefighters on an aerial ladder. Several senior citizens were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for smoke inhalation.

As many as 75 firefighters were on the scene. Officials said the fire was brought quickly under control.
