3 die when car, van carrying handicapped collide in Utah

SMITHFIELD, Utah (CNN) -- A woman and a 2-year-old child were killed Friday in northern Utah when their car was hit by a van carrying handicapped people, a highway patrol spokesman told CNN. A 50-year-old man who had been a passenger in the van died Friday afternoon of multiple injuries at Logan Memorial Hospital, said a hospital spokesman.

The accident -- near Smithfield, about 70 miles north of Salt Lake City -- left nine other people injured, two of them in critical condition.

"Early indications are that the (van) driver might have been fatigued," said Chris Kramer of the Utah Highway Patrol.

  MESSAGE BOARD

He said initial reports indicated that the small van drifted across the center line of a two-lane highway and ran into a Ford Tempo at 8:23 a.m. Road conditions at the time were good and the weather was clear, Kramer said.

Two of the four occupants in the car -- a woman and a 2-year old child -- were declared dead at the scene, he said.

Two other occupants -- the man who was driving the car and a 6-month-old girl -- were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Salt Lake City after an initial evaluation at the Logan Regional Medical Center. Both were reported in critical condition.

Six of the seven occupants of the van suffered minor injuries, said medical center spokesman Shane Hone.

The van passengers, a mix of adults and children, were handicapped, Kramer said. He said he did not know the nature of their handicaps.

The names of the victims and further details on the accident were not immediately available.
