One dead, 7 shot in Bronx block party melee

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- One man was killed, seven people were shot, another slashed and a woman was hit by a car during a melee that ensued when shooting broke out at a block party in the Bronx early Sunday morning, police said.

Police said the violence, which broke out at about 1:30 a.m. at an annual neighborhood block party attended by hundreds of people, was the result of a dispute, but provided few other details.

The eight gunshot victims, including a two-year-old who was shot once in the leg, were taken to local hospitals. One man who was shot in the head was dead on arrival, police said.

Another man was slashed, and a woman was hit by a car that was fleeing the melee, which saw bottles, shoes and other personal items left behind in the rush to flee the scene when the shooting broke out.

Police said one man was arrested for handgun possession but no one had been charged in the shooting as yet.
