Gas prices up nearly 2 cents, ending 9-week decline

gas prices

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- The average cost of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline increased by nearly two cents over the past two weeks, ending a nine-week decline in the price, a nationwide survey of gas prices released Sunday said.

On average, a gallon of gas cost $1.51 on August 25, up 1.9 cents from what it had been two weeks prior, said Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey, which tallies prices at 10,000 gas stations around the country.

That represents the first rise in the cost of gas in the United States since prices peaked June 23 at $1.67 for a gallon of self-serve regular, and ended an 18-cent decline since then, said Lundberg.

A $1 rise in the price of a barrel of crude -- to $32 -- drove the price increase, Lundberg said.

Though the national average increased, the price of gas dropped in some regions, mainly in the East Coast and Gulf Coast states, Lundberg said.

The lowest prices were in El Paso, where a gallon of self-serve regular cost $1.34. San Francisco posted the highest prices, at an average of $1.86.

Here are some other cities' prices, and how they have changed over the two weeks:

  • Atlanta: $1.36 (-3.2 cents)

  • Cincinnati: $1.48 (+11.5 cents)

  • Indianapolis: $1.36 (+11.0 cents)

  • Minneapolis: $1.58 (+16.0 cents)

  • Denver: $1.47 (-2.7 cents)

  • Los Angeles: $1.54 (+2.0 cents)

  • Houston: $1.48 (-1.3 cents)

  • Boston $1.62 (-1.5 cents)

Supplies were plentiful as the summer peak driving season nears its end Labor Day weekend.

Next month, the 10 heads of government belonging to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries are scheduled to meet to consider once again increasing production levels.
