ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (CNN) -- A New Jersey Air National Guard F-16 fighter jet crashed off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon. The pilot ejected safely and has been rescued, authorities said.

The single-seat aircraft, known as the "Fighting Falcon," was on a training mission at the time of the crash, first reported at 3:40 p.m. The plane was assigned to the 177th Fighter Wing based in Atlantic City, a spokesman said.

The pilot was rescued by a New Jersey State Police boat, according to Air Force spokesman Lou Timmons.

The plane crashed about one and a half miles off shore, Timmons said.

In a separate, unrelated incident, a military training plane crashed in a field in the San Antonio, Texas, area Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The pilot and co-pilot ejected before impact and suffered minor injuries.

Air Force Maj. Andy Roake, a spokesman for Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, said the crash of the T-6 Texan trainer II, a small propeller plane, occurred south of the city shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time.

The pilot and co-pilot both suffered cuts and bruises, and one of the men broke an ankle. No one on the ground was injured. The single-engine plane was assigned to the 177th Flying Training Squadron from the base, Roake said.
