MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK, Colorado (CNN) -- Two wildfires this summer at the nation's largest archaeological preserve killed vegetation and tourism, but there are signs that both are on the rebound.

Visitors are returning to Mesa Verde National Park, which reopened last month, its cliff dwellings intact. And while blackened trees will scar the southwest Colorado landscape for years to come, there are also bits of greenery on the ground, an indication of new growth.
