New York mayor to start cancer treatments
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was scheduled to begin radiation seed implantation Friday to treat his prostate cancer. Sunny Mindel, the mayor's press secretary, said Giuliani would cancel his schedule for the day. In May, a few weeks after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer, Giuliani abandoned a potential U.S. Senate bid against Hillary Rodham Clinton. At the time, Giuliani said he wanted to "put my health first." With radiation seed implantation, radioactive pellets, each about the size of a grain of rice, are placed directly into the prostate. The pellets give off radiation for weeks or months. The radiation is intended to destroy the cancer in the gland.
