High school gym roof collapses in Cleveland

roof collapse
The entire roof of the East High School gymnasium collapsed on Friday

CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN) -- The roof of a Cleveland, Ohio, high school gym collapsed Friday, injuring three students and two adults. A spokeswoman for the school district said none of the injuries appeared to be serious.

"I am told no one was in the gym, so I have no idea how they got injured," said Pat Martin, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland Municipal School District.

Television footage shot from a helicopter showed that the entire roof of East High School had fallen in. The building's walls still were standing; and the floor of the gym, littered with parts of the roof, was visible from the helicopter.

Martin said she did not know what caused the collapse. She said all weekend activities at the high school had been canceled.
