Two Brinks guards shot in Florida

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida (CNN) -- Two Brinks armored car guards were shot Friday during a robbery attempt at a Citibank. According to Coral Springs police, one guard was shot in the head, one was shot in the upper torso.

Both were listed in critical condition at North Broward Medical Center.

"The incident happened about 6:45 a.m. this morning at a Citibank," said Coral Springs police Sgt. Richard Nicorvo. "The guards were servicing the drive-through ATM when it happened."

Police could not confirm whether any money was stolen.

Nicorvo said a red Honda Civic, believed used in the robbery attempt, was found a few blocks from the scene. Nicorvo said the guards may have exchanged gunfire with the suspects and at least one of the suspects may have been wounded.

"There was a bullet hole in the side of the vehicle and they found weapons and bloodstains inside," said Nicorvo. "The vehicle was reported stolen about a week ago."

Nicorvo said local residents reported hearing gunshots and police are interviewing witnesses trying to determine how many people were involved.

Coral Springs is located northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
