| Two former LAPD officers surrender to court
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Two former Los Angeles police officers wanted for allegedly terrorizing a homeless man turned themselves in to authorities Monday. Christopher Coppock and David Cochrane -- onetime partners in the city's Central Division -- surrendered themselves to the Los Angeles Superior Court. They face charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence, and using excessive force. They were each facing $100,000 bail. Arraignment was scheduled for November 14. Officers allegedly terrorized manArrest warrants had been issued for the officers after a Los Angeles grand jury indictment last Friday. A source told CNN that the indictment charged Coppock and Cochrane with terrorizing a homeless man, Delton Bowen, in 1997 after he called them a derogatory name. Bowen claimed the officers took him to the Los Angeles River area, where they beat and threatened him with a handgun. Former officer supported allegationsA former LAPD officer, Sandra Salazar, reportedly witnessed part of the incident. She gave testimony that largely supported the homeless man's complaint. Her lawyer, Michael Lackie, told CNN last Friday, "My client decided to cooperate with the district attorney's office because it was the right thing to do. She was a victim of LAPD's code of silence." Cochrane was fired from the force and Coppock resigned after an internal investigation of another incident. They were accused of falsifying arrest reports and planting drugs. After Cochrane and Coppock appeared in court Monday, Judge Larry Fidler ordered the indictment against them unsealed. The case against Coppock and Cochrane comes as another corruption case is moving ahead in the courts against four former officers in the city's Rampart Division. Since the Rampart scandal broke, more than 100 criminal convictions have been overturned and at least 70 officers have come under investigation.
