| New Jersey candy-store killing suspect killed in shootoutUNION TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (Reuters) -- The man suspected of randomly shooting two New Jersey candy store customers, killing one, after asking for a candy bar, died in a police shootout Friday, authorities said. Robert O'Leary, executive assistant Union County prosecutor, confirmed that police fatally shot the suspect in Union Township. O'Leary did not identify the suspect and declined to give any details of Friday morning's shootout. Police launched a manhunt throughout northern New Jersey after the suspect walked into the Lucky Corner Gift Shop in Union Township on Monday, asked for a Butterfinger candy bar, then turned and shot two 60-year-old male customers in the head at point-blank range for no apparent reason, according to police accounts. Local resident Henry Dahlmeyer was killed and Michael Gorko was in the hospital listed in fair condition Friday, authorities said. Police theorized that the man set out to rob the store, then panicked and shot the patrons. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
