Three killed in Texas trench collapse
RICHMOND, Texas (CNN) -- A construction worker rescued Saturday from a collapsed trench in Texas has died, bringing the death toll in the accident to three. The man, whose name has not been released, had been in critical condition Saturday night at a Houston, Texas, hospital. Rescue workers dug him out and transported him by helicopter to the hospital after hearing sounds coming from the collapsed trench. The bodies of the other two workers have been found but not yet recovered, fire officials said. The collapse occurred about 10.30 a.m. at a site in Richmond, Texas, located about 23 miles southwest of Houston. "Right now we're just trying to get the ground secured so we can try to get the men out because the ground is still crumbling into the hole," said Firefighter Lori Bownds. About 75 rescue officials were at the site, where a new Office Depot is under construction. RELATED STORIES: High school gym roof collapses in Cleveland RELATED SITES: Richmond-Rosenberg, Texas |
